Women Wage Peace March for Hope and a Better Future for Israelis and Palestinians

Ameinu has actively supported the grassroots women’s peace movement Women Wage Peace (WWP) since its founding shortly after the 2014 war between Hamas and Israel.  At a time where the movement for peace between Israelis and Palestinians has stalled and so many are despairing about the future, WWP stands as a possible game changer and a ray of hope.  WWP is unique because of its conviction that women peace-makers can create a broad-based movement that breaks the mold of an Israeli peace movement.  And so, WWP is not a traditional peace organization of the political Left, but is home to thousands of women from across the spectrum – Jewish and Arab, religious and secular, Ashkenazi and Mizrachi, the center and the periphery, immigrants and native born, cities, kibbutzim, development towns and West Bank settlements.

Today, WWP is in the middle of its most dramatic event yet – The March of Hope.  The March began just after Rosh Hashanah and will culminate on October 19th on Sukkot.  Today, women are marching from all corners of Israel educating in communities along the way and engaging new activists to join the movement.  Palestinian and Israeli women will be marching together.  Palestinian women will march in the West Bank and will join with their sisters from Jordan. And solidarity marches are being organized across the United States, and in Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, France, Italy, Germany and elsewhere.

On Sukkot the March will end at Prime Minister Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem where the WWP activists will be joined by Nobel Peace laureate Leymah Gbowee, leader of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace and a key inspiration for WWP.   At the end of the March, WWP will establish a Peace Tent and will immediately begin “Day After” activities to demand a negotiated settlement with the Palestinians, prioritization of peace by the government of Israel and full participation of women in all aspects of peace-making.
